That's the original recording of one of my sets:


Loads of dynamics, some nasty peaks though, so I used a limiter to get rid of them - here's the result:


Dynamics are still there, but the overall volume's a bit higher, and the peaks are gone.

Now this is how a set looks like, where the dynamics are smashed:


Of course this is much louder, but it has killed what makes lots of trance tracks beautiful, the dynamics.

Yeah, I was a bit ironic

Of course it was way too low, but I prefer a set where the volume's too low than a set with smashed dynamics. I have a volume control, so I can simply turn my stereo up

But enough of the techtalk, even though I love talking about audio stuff, I've learned that most people don't care about it, and it's also off topic (but we can continue our discussion in another topic or by PM if you want to :smile1

that is of course true, but on a radio it's pretty annoying when you have to turn the volume up for one set, and then the next one suddenly blows you away cause its +5 db. so normalizing should be the bare minimum, and compressing too much should be a no-no

(and since you like tech talk: recording the set at too low volume will make you lose dynamics as well, due to the limited 16-bit precision of most audio stuff... unless the original recording was done at larger sample sizes than your audio output uses AND you're using an mp3-level pre-amplifier when playing the audio back... )

Agreed, and as you can see the peaks at the original recording are at almost 0 dB, so I have no clipping and make use of the full dynamic range of 16 Bit.
