Why did you start listen to trance?

Really I started to like trance music when I've listened the Epic Trance of the 2000's years, like "Storm - Storm" or "WEB - Mornings". Then I expanded my love for trance music when I've discovered music composition in the 2003 by downloading more stuff like that.

Came into Trance via a 4 CD compilation of Trance 2000, which I constantly burrowed from my sister.

But it really got intense when I became part of the Bombsquad DJ Team (as hardstyle DJ), since they also played Trance and brought me along for some of their gigs.

Right now, as part of The Skypirates DJ Team, I hardly listen to anything else.
And I could not imagine a life without trance on the decks or in Ableton.

Ok, I always love to think that Trance music came to me, like being among the rare Chosen ones.. I used to listen to Indian Music when I was a kid, and then, in high school, it was more Hip-Hop, Hard Rock and Soft Rock, Heavy Metal Rock and I remember always liking Enigma and the sort

Then my cousin, who was not into trance, bought a compilation CD with tracks from The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Sub6 and Tiesto. It brought feelings in me I never knew I had or could have when it comes to Music. It was more powerful than anything I had felt, I can assure you.

I did not know it was Electronic Music or Trance yet, then I went to a record shop and talking to the guy over there, he recommended A State Of Trance Yearmix 2005 by Armin van Buuren and without second thoughts, I bought it. I still recall him burning the CD in front of me So ASOT Yearmix 2005 was the first Trance CD I bought and since then, Trance became the music which defines me and suits me best. Being exposed to various music genres, I do not think there is one which can make me feel or touch me like Trance or Electronic Music does.. It is very rare to find people with similar music taste in Mauritius, like extremely rare and even my friends think it is only loud noise.

I'll never forget my first encounter with TRANCE ....this was May 2004, I was going to get fast food at a local spot called Los Perros....I walked in to see this guy spinning music on a circular stage in front of thousands of people....I immediately asked the owner who is this and he says Tiesto....he was playing Tiesto in Concert dvd....I was instantly hooked...it was an indesribable feeling....My first trance cd was Tiesto - Nyana album

Growing up here in the States all you listen to is Rap/hip-hop and pop. I remember i went to a job interview and i had gotten there early so they tell me wait and look around.This was at an electronics store which also carried music cd's.At there demo station they had the Paul VanDyk "Out there and back" Cd , I listened to it and i was blown away.After the interview i went back and bought the Cd.I knever looked back. Its hard to explain but Trance music brings the felling of flying and sometimes crying at the sametime.

I love trance coz it escapes from the daily routine, I have lestining to it since a long time but i don' t remember when but it was with ATB and Paul Oak in last 90's still have these tapes hehe but at that time I don't know the word trance for me its techno but one day a met someone from Netherlands who said" waaaaw you like Trance music Me too haha" but still wondering for what he says, so I asked what do you mean by Trance music its dance music do you speak english (I thought he spelled wrong words hehe) but said that its kind of music called Trance and we have many producers in Holland and he named me some dj names as PvD, Redsector, cosmic gates, ferry ... and since then I've become a fan of them by bying there CDs and tapes and I use Trance and I wrote it everywhere in my books copybooks and even in school walls hehehe. Now Im looking that trance fans are become much and they speeks about it like a savant hehe really crazy world, Trance your are my close friend, my drugs my dream and my life vision, Trance is Love and peace, trance is a part of me may its me when Iam just a part.

Trance interested hmm I started in 2001 listening to local radio, then I heard a piece of rank 1 - breathing and fell in love, then search for more songs, and so to this day, I love trance, you can break away from humdrum reality

Been into dance music from the early 90's when i started going out clubbing. The 1st couple of tracks that lead me along the path of trance would have to be Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Cosmic Baby's Impression) from '93, Gypsy - I Trance you and a lot of the early PVD stuff on the alias of "The Visions of Shiva"...

I don't know why, but I love threads like this. I just love to hear people's experiences and origins for their passion for Trance and EDM. I realize my story is a little longer than most, but I am helplessly passionate about music that I just enjoy sharing the details.


Anyway, to answer OP's question:

I got into electronic music a little over a decade ago. Like many others, I do remember being about 10 years old or so and absolutely loving the electronic soundtrack of racing games, especially Need For Speed!

I don't remember how I came across it, but I do know that the very first electronic track that I fell in love with was Trance[]Control - Dream of Trance (YouTube - Trance[]Control - Dream of trance), but it was mislabeled as being done by Paul Oakenfold. So, I asked my older brother if he knew who Paul Oakenfold was since he was just getting into the scene as well, and a few days later he let me listen to A Voyage Into Trance.

I immediately fell in love with Oakenfold (not realizing at the time that it was a compilation and not an artist album) and soon started getting into The Prodigy (Firestarter) and The Crystal Method (Keep Hope Alive) and eventually ATB (9PM - Till I Come). Like the OP, I began looking into anything considered 'techno,' and I knew nothing about the genre differences. Outside of my brother, the only electronic music that was popular seemed to be La Bouche.

It wasn't too much longer until I had an encounter with Push - Universal Nation, the one track that has reigned supreme as my all time favorite song throughout all these years. Despite it's repetition, I cannot get enough of it! It is one of many tracks that gives me goosebumps, but it was certainly the first track to give me goosebumps.

Still, NO one in my area listened to this kind of music. I felt kind of like an outcast since everyone thought it was weird, stupid, or gay. So, I mostly listened in secret, as lame as that sound, but at the same time I think that it helped me connect to it. I realize this sounds ridiculously corny and lame, especially since I was only about 12 at this time, but I was able to realize that electronic music can definitely be made very personal. I continued to listen in secret for a long while, finding so much personal satisfaction in artists like ATB, Paul van Dyk, Tiesto, etc.

While I listened to EDM on the side, I had developed a wonderful love for Heavy Metal (so it was definitely conflicting to have the harsh sounds and screaming vocals of Metal contrasting with the beautiful and warm melodies of Trance), but around 2005 I finally started listening to both genres about the same. It stayed that way until December 27, 2008. That night, I went to my first rave and saw ATB live here in DC.

Granted, a lot of people hate ATB, but to me he's always been a personal hero, and even though my date was sick (ended up vomitting twice :/) I still managed to have a great time while comforting her. We left early, but I was on such a high that night from the atmosphere - it was the most euphoric thing I had ever felt in my life and I couldn't believe the unity, harmony, and energy in the room.

I was hooked and couldn't wait for my next gig, which happened to be Above & Beyond in February, which I originally wasn't even planning on going to, but that night I stayed from 10:00PM - 4:30AM and it confirmed that this is by far the best feeling in the world.

Present day, I have been to dozens of shows and had my first festival experience at Electric Zoo Festival 2009 in NYC, but this year I have booked for both days instead of just one and I have been DYING to go all year. The more I listen, the more I become addicted. I honestly can't fathom how people can not enjoy the pure emotions and powerful energy that comes from Trance. No other kind of music comes close to Trance, but of course I love most styles of EDM as well, but aside from that I rarely listen to much else anymore. ESPECIALLY after participating in the global community of ASOT 400. I never felt such connection and unity before by just sitting alone in my room at my computer and listening to music while talking to complete strangers from other countries over IRC. -- It was INCREDIBLE!

Now, I feel much like this: YouTube - Faithless - God is a Dj - I take how good I feel and share it with everybody!!

I realize that my story is pretty cheesy and corny, but I honestly don't care. Music is quite possibly my biggest passion in life, so I hold a lot of value to it. I just wish I could produce or mix, even for just a hobby. For now, I just stick to being the musical guru that friends come to when they are finally ready to embark on their Voyage Into Trance. :D

actively since 2003, i stole 'The Best Of Trance 2003' compilation from my sister and ever since Envio's Touched By The Sun I was hooked. I also liked Pulser from those CDs and even Tiesto at that time...how times change :D
Subconciously I started maybe earlier, my biggest sister (have two) grew up when the whole acid house scene in UK developed in the mid 90s and she played her music always quite loud, very much to the annoyance of my parents.
Dogzilla featured in Football Factory in same year and I also could receive ASoT via antenna, first episodes I remember must have been from the early 100s. Although trance was never my one and only favorite I pretty much sourced record shops and other stores for tracks. I'm also hugely into DnB so I'd widen my answer to "When did I start listening to EDM", I started spinning some of it around '05 when I got my first TTs, now all CDJs and occassionally software (Traktor). Wish I had discovered Serato earlier but then, the sale of my TTs payed a big part towards my CDJ setup.
All time greats would be Johann Gielen, Jonas Steur, Airwave, Corsten incl aliases, BT, Signum to name just a few and was also admiring the skills of Markus Schulz and Nick Warren (more housey with a touch of trance but borders are fluent to me), knowing I want to spin too. and so the story goes...

just to make the "why" more clear -so far I focussed on the "when"- it's the structure of sounds, the arrangements and the high bpms, they always seemed to fit my way of life, an appropiate soundtrack so to speak, with some goosebumps moments especially when on hols as well.
